Spot market freight rates have improved across the board, according to new weekly figures from the freight matching service provider DAT Solutions. Vans had the biggest increase, 2.4%, from Nov. 30 through Dec. 6 compared to the previous seven days, turning in an average of $2.10 per mile, 8 cents higher than three weeks earlier. Reefers were not far behind with a 1.7% improvement, hitting $2.41 per mile and 10 cents higher than three weeks ago. Flatbeds registered a 0.9% increase for an average of $2.33 per mile and its best showing out of the four-week period. This happened as the number of spot market loads available to haul surged 20% but truck capacity to move the freight increased only 11%. Spot market freight rates have improved over the past week, though some more than others, according to the freight matching service provider DAT Solutions. Reefers posted the biggest gain, 1.1%, for Nov. 23 through Nov. 29 compared to the previous seven days, for an average of $2.37 per mile, its best showing out of the last four weeks. The gain was possibly due to heightened demand and bad weather, according to DAT. Vans gained nearly as much, 1%, for an average of $2.05 per mile, also its best performance out of the past four weeks. Flatbeds barely edged higher, 0.1%, but the average rate was unchanged from the week before at $2.31 per mile, as winter is typically a slow season for the sector, according to DAT. Rates on the spot freight market gained little ground if any, according to the latest weekly roundup of activity from the freight matching service provider DAT Solutions. An increase in overall spot market truck capacity of 3.6% from Oct. 5 through Oct. 11 over the previous seven days, along with a 5% decline in the number of total spot market loads available, pulled the average flatbed rate down 0.8% to $2.40 per mile. Van rates were unchanged at $2.03 per mile, where its been three out of the past four weeks, while reefers gained 0.4%, despite a slip in the fuel surcharge, registering $2.29 per mile. Not surprisingly this was reflected in lower load-to-truck ratios with reefers giving up 12% for 8.7 loads for every truck during the period, as reefer truck capacity gained 3.4% while reefer freight availability fell 9%.
